What Is the Best RV Type for Full-Time Living?
Now, let’s talk a bit about the difference between the different RV types.
You likely have a decent idea of which you prefer based on size and features, but there’s more you might not be considering.
Here are some pros and cons to consider for each RV type when deciding which is best for your full-time RV lifestyle:
Class A motorhomes
Class A RVs are the mega luxury choice of motorhomes. They’re not only the largest RV type but typically have the most numerous and expensive luxury features.
If you’re looking for a luxury home on wheels, completely self-sufficient and full of comfort, a Class A is the perfect choice.
They also tend to have one of the widest ranges of floorplans and extra features, including everything from various different interior materials, furniture, and even things like pull-out exterior LCD TVs.
With that said, they’re also astronomically expensive compared to other RVs and are notoriously hard to maneuver given their size.
You’ll also find that many campsites can’t accommodate Class A’s due to their size.
Class B vans
Class B RVs are camper vans and the smallest motorhome available.
They’re great for solo travelers, couples, or new families that don’t need much space.
It’s also worth mentioning that Class B vans are the easiest to maneuver, which is a big plus considering how hard trailers and large RVs are to transport.
You’ll have no problem fitting into typical parking spaces either, a luxury not available to other RVs.
With that said, because they’re so small you’ll be giving up quite a bit in terms of space and features, which is most noticeable in terms of (typically) missing a bathroom and full kitchen.
Class C motorhomes
Class C RVs offer a great balance of affordability and space, being much larger than Class B vans but not far off from Class A buses.
They’re far easier to maneuver than Class A’s while affording features such as a bathroom, more sleeping and living space, and a proper kitchen.
As opposed to Class A RVs, you’ll have no trouble fitting into any campground.
With that said, Class C RVs can still feel restrictive in terms of available space and features compared to Class A’s and fifth wheels.
Fifth wheels
Fifth wheels are the Class A of travel trailers, being much larger and full-featured than other trailer types.
They have a unique hitch mechanism and are also generally easier to maneuver compared to travel trailers.
With fifth wheels, you get tons of space and incredible luxury features, which typically includes:
- Private bedroom with either queen or king-sized bed
- Full dry bath with standing shower
- Several slide outs, which can include a full dinette, sofas, and more living space
- And lots of storage space
With that said, you’ll need a big truck to be able to haul a travel trailer around so you’ll need to make sure that yours is capable of towing whatever fifth wheel you’re considering.
In addition to this, like Class A RVs you won’t be able to fit in certain campgrounds.
And there’s the pricing point: they’re much more expensive than travel trailers and Class C’s (though often more affordable than Class A’s without being far off in terms of available space).
Travel trailer
Travel trailers can vary greatly in size, from a small trailer barely the size of a Class B to a larger Class C with tons of space.
As opposed to fifth wheels that require heavy-duty trucks to haul, some travel trailers can be pulled with any truck and even some SUVs depending on their size.
Travel trailers have the most variety in terms of style and floorplans as well, giving you lots of options to choose from.
With that said, many smaller travel trailers aren’t built for full-time living, so you’ll need to make sure that the one you’re getting has everything you’ll need (and that you’ll be comfortable living in it).
Toy hauler
Less than an entirely different RV class, toy haulers are more a modification on travel trailers and fifth wheels that adds a garage in the rear for storing large toy vehicles such as dirt bikes and ATVs.
However, that space is rarely wasted as most toy haulers have extremely creative garage conversions.
That includes being able to switch the garage into another living or sleeping space with pull-out bunks, drop down beds and sofas, and most toy hauler ramps convert into an outdoor patio.
They’re also typically equipped with fuel tanks in that same garage space, making them incredibly convenient.
The main drawback is that the same garage space, while conversion capable, won’t offer the same benefits as dedicated RV space such as in your average travel trailer or fifth wheel.
Also, due to what they’re hauling they usually require a heavy duty truck for towing.

On the low end, $1,000 per month is possible in some areas and with a strict budget. However, if you go all-out and have a reasonable RV payment, as much as $3,000+ is also not uncommon.
