What Is the Difference Between a Fifth Wheel, Travel Trailer, and Toy Hauler?
Figuring out the difference between the three can be a bit confusing if you’re shopping for an RV for the first time.
Here’s a quick breakdown to make everything clear:
Travel trailer
A travel trailer is one of two main sizes of trailer-based RVs.
A travel trailer is a mid-sized RV that typically weighs 10,000 – 12,000 lbs on average.
However, that average is deceptive because they come in all different sizes, from 1,500 lbs to well over 10,000.
Some smaller travel trailers can be towed by SUVs but most require a pickup truck.
If you’re familiar with RV sizes, they’re comparable to Class C RVs only on a trailer as opposed to motorized.
Fifth wheel
A fifth wheel is similar to a travel trailer only much larger and uses a special hitch.
Given their larger size, you’ll need a pickup truck with the right tow rating to manage the average fifth wheel.
Fifth wheels often have a second level bunk bed, a dry bathroom, and private bedroom typically at the head of the trailer.
