Ants might be tiny, but collectively they can be a colossal hassle.
Getting into food supplies, crawling all over your counters, getting into your trash, the list goes on.
Not to mention, they’re not always the common and benign black ants. If you’re unlucky, you could have an issue with fire ants or worse.
Fortunately, there are lots of amazing repellants you can use to ward off ants, many of them 100% natural and safe to use within your RV.
So, let’s dig into our best tops for getting rid of ants in your camper.
How to Get Rid of Ants In Your Camper: 6 Solutions
There are about as many potential solutions for getting rid of ants as you could possibly think of.
Some involve using a chemical to kill the ants, others use powder or something similar to ward ants off as they won’t cross natural barriers but go around (or avoid them altogether).
With that said, here are some of the best solutions cited most frequently by avid RVers:
1. Baking soda
Baking soda like Arm & Hammer is one of the most commonly used methods of repelling ants, but it can also be used to control an infestation as well.
Ants don’t like powder of any kind and will avoid it if you lay it out in a line or any other shape, actively avoiding it as though it were an impassable wall.
It’s actually pretty entertaining to see and can be used to your advantage to both thwart ants from entering your RV and keeping them contained to a small section of your RV if used in combination with some kind of bait.
2. Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is another commonly used powder with a similar purpose and is 100% natural.
Sprinkle it in a line around your RV to ward off ants or use in combination with bait to get an infestation under control.
Keep in mind that it does more than just ward them off, however, which you may or may not prefer. Diatomaceous earth is an extremely fine powder that will attach itself to ants and cause a loss of mobility by getting stuck between joints.
3. Cedar Oil
Another great natural option, this comes in the form of an oil. The benefit of cedar oil is that it isn’t a powder, which especially in the case of diatomaceous earth needs to be dry to work properly.
If your environment isn’t completely dry, something like cedar oil might do the job more effectively.
4. Baby powder
Another great powder option is baby powder.
Not much to say here about this as it’s the same idea as baking soda, you can use it to create an unbroken line that ants won’t cross to ward them off or prevent them from coming in the first place.
This is one of the few remedies that you may already have on hand for various purposes, so we’ve included it for that purpose even though it’s similar to other remedies on this list.
5. Ant bait
While not a natural option, ant bait such as Terro is suggested by many to ward off ants and is particularly effective at dealing with infestations.
Terro is a gel-based bait that comes in small packages which lure ants in and kill them. You can drop them all around inside and out of your rig.
6. Peppermint oil
Peppermint oil is our last option, but it’s certainly not the least effective.
You’ll typically find the other remedies above mentioned before peppermint oil in reference to ants, but it’s highly effective in warding off all types of little critters from bugs to rodents.
Peppermint oil is highly distilled, making it incredibly potent and even dangerous to come in contact with, so it’s no surprise that insects and small animals hate the stuff.
